Saint Catherine's Monastery - Sinai, Egypt

Situated in the middle of a rocky crevasse on Mount Sinai, this remarkable monastery was begun in the sixth century

on the supposed site where Moses first beheld the burning bush.  A church was built near the still flourishing bush,

and a monastic community soon sprang up around it. Eventually the church was enlarged, a library was built to house

precious manuscripts and icons, and a mosque was hastily constructed in the tenth century to discourage any attack

from the Fatimid caliphs.  Other buildings accrued, and a protective wall was finally built around the complex.
