Saint Catherine's Monastery

One of the things that fascinates me about monasteries architecturally is that, though they usually begin with an ordered

and logically laid-out design, they soon become almost chaotic conglomerates of heteroclite structures in unlikely juxtaposition

to eachother, where clearly only the denizens can find their way. I have no idea of the purpose most of these little buildings serve.

Whatever their actual uses, for me they provide ample opportunities for hidden compartments.
